Estimate under the funding guideline and the law as of October 2026, not advice. Only the bank’s grant approval is binding. How we calculate
For a heat pump in a home you own in Germany, the federal promotional bank (KfW) pays a grant of at least 30 % of eligible costs in 2026, capped at €28,000 for the first home when you apply by 31 January 2027. If you live in the house and replace an oil, coal, night storage or gas flat heater, or a gas or biomass boiler at least 20 years old, you get a 16 % climate speed bonus (Klimageschwindigkeitsbonus) on top. With taxable household income up to €50,000, the income bonus is added. The total rate is capped at 70 %, or 80 % for incomes up to €30,000. For a €30,000 heat pump replacing a 22-year-old gas boiler, that means €12,880 at €90,000 income, €15,680 at €45,000 and €22,400 for a family on €40,000 with one child. If the gas boiler is under 20 years old, it stays at €8,400.
What the calculator checks
First the date: applications up to 20 July 2026 fall under the old guideline, from 21 July under the new one of 17 August 2026 (Federal Gazette). Then the old system: only that decides whether the climate speed bonus applies. Then income, averaged from the tax assessments for the second and third years before you apply (information sheet 458). If you arrived in Germany recently and have no German assessments for those years, the income bonus cannot be proven. Last the ceiling: 70 % or 80 % of eligible costs.
| Household | Rate | Grant | Own share |
|---|---|---|---|
| €90,000, gas 22 years | 46 % | €12,880 | €17,120 |
| €45,000, gas 22 years | 56 % | €15,680 | €14,320 |
| €40,000 with a child | 80 % | €22,400 | €7,600 |
| €90,000, gas 12 years | 30 % | €8,400 | €21,600 |
