What waiting costs
Estimate under the funding guideline and the law as of October 2026, not advice. Only the bank’s grant approval is binding. How we calculate
If you own a home in Germany and replace an old heating system with a heat pump, a pellet boiler or a heat network connection in 2026, the federal promotional bank (KfW) pays a basic grant of 30 % on eligible costs of up to €28,000 for the first home. Owners who live in the house get two bonuses on top: the climate speed bonus (Klimageschwindigkeitsbonus) of 16 % for oil, coal, night storage and gas flat heaters, and for gas or biomass boilers aged 20 years or more, and the income bonus of 40 %, 30 % or 10 % for taxable household income up to €50,000. The total is capped at 70 %, or 80 % for incomes up to €30,000. The application date matters: from 1 February 2027 the climate bonus drops to 12 % and the cap to €27,250, then falls again every six months. Example: oil boiler, a €32,000 heat pump and €45,000 income give €15,680 if you apply now and €14,170 from February 2027. Since 29 July 2026 nobody is obliged to replace a working boiler.
What Heizrechnen does differently: it works out, for one specific household, the grant on the exact day of the application, with the 16% climate bonus until 31 January 2027 and then 12, 8 and 4%, with the cost cap that falls every six months from €28,000, plus running costs in your own state and the CO₂ cost. Every rule carries its source and date, and there is no quote form.
Oil boiler replaced, heat pump for €32,000, owner-occupied. Dark bar: income €80,000, light bar: €35,000.
Cap for the first home: €28,000 to €25,000. From Q1 2027 the basic grant for heat pumps not made in the EU may drop to 15 %; an EU-made unit is assumed here.

The calculator’s example is deliberately ordinary: a detached house you live in, an oil boiler, a quote of €32,000 for an air-source heat pump, taxable household income of €45,000 and no children under 18. €28,000 is eligible, because the cap for the first home is €28,000 for applications up to 31 January 2027 (BEG EM guideline, no. 8.3.1). On that come 30 % basic grant, 16 % climate speed bonus and 10 % income bonus: 56 %, or €15,680. You pay €16,320 yourself.
| Applying from | Climate bonus | Cost cap | Grant |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 October 2026 | 16 % | €28,000 | €15,680 |
| 1 February 2027 | 12 % | €27,250 | €14,170 |
| 1 August 2028 | 0 % | €25,000 | €10,000 |
The cap falls in €750 steps down to €22,000 from 1 August 2030; the guideline runs until the end of 2030. More on the steps under climate speed bonus, on income under income bonus.

For a 140 m² house in efficiency class E, the site uses the German Weather Service’s heating degree days for the state and the efficiency of a typical boiler. In North Rhine-Westphalia that gives 16,229 kWh of heat a year. Gas at the average household price of 11.58 ct per kWh in the first half of 2026 (Federal Statistical Office) costs €2,403, heating oil at the twelve-month average €2,214, and an air-source heat pump with the seasonal performance factor of 3.4 measured in older homes (Fraunhofer ISE) €1,310 on a heat pump tariff. How much the climate matters is shown in the comparison of states; electricity alone is in the power use calculator.
For 2026 the Fuel Emissions Trading Act sets a corridor of €55 to €65 per tonne (section 10 BEHG); auctions so far have cleared at the top price on average (DEHSt). One litre of heating oil therefore carries 20.7 ct of CO₂ cost including VAT, at 2.68 kg of CO₂ per litre. For 2027 the Bundestag passed the same corridor on 15 October 2026 (Bundestag); the act has not yet been promulgated. From 2028 the EU ETS2 is due to take over, with no fixed price. Every rate, deadline and cap comes from the guideline of 17 August 2026 and the bank’s information sheet; the bank’s own worked examples run as automated tests before each release. Announced rules without a start date are flagged by the calculator rather than presented as law. In full under how we calculate.
At least 30 % of up to €28,000, so up to €8,400. If you live in the house and replace an oil or old gas boiler you get 16 % more; with €90,000 income that makes €12,880. With a low income the rate rises to 80 %: a family with €40,000 income and a child gets €22,400.
Not if you are replacing an old oil or gas boiler. The climate speed bonus falls from 16 % to 12 % on 1 February 2027, to 8 % on 1 August 2027 and is gone from 1 August 2028. The cost cap drops by €750 every half year. In the example, applying in August 2028 instead of now costs €5,680. The date of the application counts, not the installation date.
No. The Building Modernisation Act (Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz), in force since 29 July 2026, removed the 65 percent renewables rule and the duty to replace boilers after 30 years. Working systems may keep running and new gas or oil boilers may be installed again. A new one must, however, use a rising share of biomethane, bio-oil or hydrogen from 2029: 10 % from 2029, 60 % from 2040.
Sign first, but with a condition: the supply or works contract with the installer must be made conditional on the grant approval. Then apply to the bank. After approval you have 36 months to finish the work and then 6 months to send the proof. Starting work without an application loses the grant.
The taxable income (zu versteuerndes Einkommen) of every owner and spouse or partner in the household, averaged over the second and third calendar years before you apply and shown by tax assessments. If a child under 18 with child benefit lives with you, €10,000 is deducted once, however many children there are. Up to €30,000 gives 40 %, up to €40,000 30 %, up to €50,000 10 %. If you moved to Germany recently, German tax assessments for those years are needed.
From the first quarter of 2027 the guideline sets a basic grant of 15 % for heat pumps plus a 15 % value-added bonus if the unit is made in the EU. The exact start date and proof rules have not been published. An EU-made unit would stay at 30 %; other units would lose 15 %.
